Metro Vancouver’s biggest BBQ competition & free public event will sizzle on September 19th with more competitive teams, more barbequed food & more family fun

August 19, 2010 (Langley, B.C.)The countdown to Metro Vancouver’s hottest BBQ competition is officially on. With just one month to go until the fifth annual BBQ On The Bypass on Sunday, September 19th, organizers have secured a record number of participating sponsors, competitive BBQ teams and vendors for the biggest and best event yet.

New this year is the Great B.C. Bake Off, an amateur pie and tart baking competition; an expanded concession area; and a “Mini Pitmasters” tent with activities for young children. The event will be co-emceed by bestselling cookbook author and international BBQ champion, Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuk and B.C.’s BBQ Queen, owner of Well Seasoned and the event’s organizer, Angie Quaale.  The esteemed panel of certified judges will include Food Network celebrity chef, Anthony Sedlak and City of Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender. Competitors range from the star of the TV show BBQ Pitmasters, Harry Soo; Brian Misko from House of Q; and last year’s reigning champs Sugar’s BBQ from Portland, Oregon. Returning again this year is Langley blues rock band, OS5, and as always, the event will offer lots of free barbeque samples throughout the day as teams turn in their meats for judging.

“As the popularity of southern style barbequing continues to grow in B.C., so does the popularity of our competition with teams throughout the Pacific Northwest and the general public in the Metro Vancouver area,” said Angie Quaale, organizer of BBQ On The Bypass. “We’ve seen a steady increase in attendance over the years and our fifth year is guaranteed to be our biggest event yet.”

The BBQ On The Bypass is a competition based event where up to 30 teams will be competing for cash prizes in the categories of chicken, ribs, beef brisket, pork butt and a chef’s choice category of halibut or turkey. The team with the highest overall points will be crowned the BBQ on the Bypass Grand Champion and up to $5,000 in cash prizes. The BBQ on the Bypass is also the site of the B.C. BBQ Championship, the last in a series of competitions throughout B.C. where the team with the most points in all five provinicial competitions will be crowned the BC BBQ Champion, earning the David Valjasic Cup and $1,000 in cash.

Angie Quaale joins forces with “Diva Q” as first Canadian team & B.C. competitor on American program with 900,000 viewers

July 27, 2010 (Langley, B.C.) -  Angie Quaale, B.C.’s Queen of BBQ and owner of Well Seasoned in Langley and organizer of the annual BBQ on the Bypass, will be featured in the premiere episode of season two of the popular reality TV show, BBQ PITMASTERS. Quaale wrapped up filming last month in Los Angeles where she joined forces with Toronto’s “Diva Q” barbeque team featuring Danielle Dimovski and her husband Vlado to compete against five teams in the ultimate barbeque challenge. The episode will air on Thursday, September 2nd at 10 pm PST/9 pm Central on Discovery – TLC.

The Diva Q team was selected from thousands of entries to compete on the show and will be the first Canadian team to ever appear on the program. Quaale, who also competes on her own team called “Competely Q-Less” was invited by Dimovski to act as an assistant pitmaster, making Quaale the first British Columbia resident to ever be featured on BBQ PITMASTERS.   “I was so honoured Danielle invited me to join her for this incredibly exciting and nerve wracking experience,” said Angie Quaale. “From the moment I landed in L.A., I was miked and on camera and we never knew what challenge or turn of events was ahead of us. I’ve competed in countless barbeque contests but this was definitely the most challenging yet!”

In season two of BBQ PITMASTERS, teams from throughout North America will compete against each other in different categories with the weekly winners facing off against each other in the second season finale. The panel of judges includes celebrity chef Art Smith, author of Back to the Table and Kitchen Life; SuperBowl champion and BBQ enthusiast, Warren Sapp; and Myron Mixon, a season one competitor and owner of Jack’s Old South.

As part of her contract with Discovery-TLC, Quaale has been sworn to secrecy regarding the details of her appearance on the show. She can reveal, however, that the challenge did involve barbequing alligator, a meat she had never cooked with before.

This will be Quaale’s second brush with the popular program. The first was earlier this year, when it was announced that Harry Soo, a celebrity chef from season one of BBQ PITMASTERS will be participating in the 2010 BBQ on the Bypass on September 19th and teaching a BBQ cooking class at Well Seasoned in Langley.
